Prevent Frozen Pipes, Prevent Costly Leaks

Granted, knowing how to detect a water leak is important, but it’s also imperative that you take preventative steps for keeping leaks from occurring in the first place. In preparation for winter’s cold snaps, we recommend taking preventative measures that include: 

  • Checking faucets for water flow and pressure twice daily – once in the morning and once before closing the building 
  • Checking that all fire sprinkler systems are up-to-date and properly functioning 
  • Closing all windows located near water pipes 
  • Disconnecting garden hoses and installing covers on all faucets located on the exterior of the building 
  • Having boilers, furnaces and water heaters inspected and serviced regularly 
  • Heating basement areas and installing insulated windows 
  • Insulating outside the walls of the building and any unheated areas 
  • Turning the water to a slow drip or small trickle during times of extreme cold 
  • Wrapping all water pipes exposed to the elements or in unheated and non-insulated locations
